Check Out Some Different Techniques to Do Long Exposure Photography

There are numerous ways to capture a cool image with trying long exposure photography. Recently I was up at a cabin in Victor Idaho and tried out some techniques. One technique popular among long exposure photography is the night-scape photograph with stars. I tired this out over the summer and loved it so I was excited to get clear enough skies again to do it. For this photo I did a 20 second shutter with a wide open aperture and a kicked up ISO to about 3200. To get the trees and cabin lit up I used a flash light to paint in while the shutter was open.

For this photo I was focused more on lighting up the cabin and was hoping for some stars as I got. I used a strong flash light to paint in light with a 15 second exposure. I closed down my aperture to around f/11 but kept my ISO kicked up high!

For this kind of long exposure photography it looks complicated but really it was only a 2 second exposure, ISO 100 (pretty low), and aperture moderately wide at f/6.3. Sometimes you just have to get creative and this was actually with the help of Ben Harker. He took an old bike wheel and stuck some lights on it then we timed it just right to get it to spin in full circle in two seconds creating a cool half orb. Ben and his wife Janae are both very talented photographers and designers. Check out their work here.
