Designing a Hoon Kota logo for a Hoonigan Fan.
A few months ago I had a friend see some of my design work and ask if I could design a logo for him. I asked him what’d it be for and he like most of us had named is truck, unlike most of us though he wanted a logo for his truck. He had purchased and worked on this truck to make it his own. To him his truck is more than just something he drives but an expression of him and holds his great memories. The truck’s name, Hoon Kota, comes from a combination of Hoonigan (famous racing team), and his truck’s model, the Dodge Dakota.
Process:
Step 1:
I immediately began thinking of ways I could incorporate my friend and his style into this logo. I had never designed a logo for a truck so I looked up some ideas on the internet to see what could lead to some ideas. I then began making rough sketches of any ideas that came to mind. He had specified that this was going to be a vinyl sticker he’d put across the top front and/or back window of his truck so I knew it’d need to be more text based.
Step 2:
After I had some rough sketches I started designing some drafts in Adobe Illustrator using some images I had pulled from the internet on specific design like Washington State and the Seattle Space Needle.
Step 3:
I wanted to make sure I had some options for him to choose from so I after some feedback from other friends, these were the three I ended up giving to him to as options. I used black as the color due to the fact that it’d be on a clear window. I used Abolition font because I liked the thick stroke and nice cut edges.
Step 4:
He ended up loving all of them but being that he didn’t want three he decided to have me combine some elements together and went with two variations. He decided to choose the Washington state with bars as the vinyl logo for his truck and the Seattle Space Needle as one for small stickers.
Since it was Christmas time I designed and included this fun coupon as a gift for him:
