How to Get a Studio Black Background Without a Studio
Did you think you needed a Studio get that nice sleek and dramatic backdrop aka the studio black background? Guess what you don’t! However you will need a speed light or some kind of off camera light source! I learned how to do this method through my professor Caryn Esplin who showed me a tutorial from Glyn Dewis (link at the bottom of the page). He calls it “The Invisible Black Backdrop” and explains how you get this effect by changing the settings on your camera to make your background very dark for your camera, then when a subject is added in you light them with a speed light. With this you’ll have a dramatic lighting and a studio black background that no one will be able to tell the difference of whether you were actually in a studio or not! Did I mention this works both indoors and outdoors, in broad daylight, or in no light?
I didn’t know I could achieve something so clean and dramatic with the equipment little equipment I had till I learned this. I shot using a Canon 7D Mark II, 1/200 shutter, and my f stop varied on whether I was inside or outside and the lighting conditions. My portrait was shot outside in the middle of the day on a somewhat cloudy day, where as the other two others were shot inside with low lighting.
